FPL's Shopping List Can Help You Save Energy and Money

FPL’s Danielle Mousseau recently visited a local home improvement store with the goal of spending $100 on energy-efficient products.

Juno Beach, FL, October 05, 2011 -- If you've ever wondered if it’s worth spending the extra few dollars to buy energy efficient products, one bargain-savvy shopper says 'absolutely' - and she’s tallied the savings to prove it.

FPL’s Danielle Mousseau recently visited a local home improvement store with the goal of spending $100 on energy-efficient products.

As someone who finds home improvement stores a little daunting, I knew I needed to be prepared. I brought a list with me so I knew exactly what I was looking for, and so I could get the most savings for the money,” she said.

Here’s a look at Danielle’s shopping list:

5 Compact fluorescent light bulbs
Estimated Cost: $15
Energy Savings:$250/lifetime

1 Low flow shower head
Estimated Cost: $30
Energy Savings: $80/year

3 Faucet aerators
Estimated Cost: $8
Energy Savings: $15/ year

Weather stripping
and door sweeps
Estimated Cost: $40
Energy Savings: $50/year

1 Water heater
pipe insulation kit
Estimated Cost: $5
Energy Savings: $14/year
Cost $98 Total Energy Savings $409

For less than $100, Mousseau managed to purchase products that, over their lifetime, will save her $409 – that’s more than a 400 percent return on her quick shopping trip.

The idea I want to share with people is that making just a few small changes around your home can make a big difference - both for saving energy and money,” she said. “As an FPL customer, I know I have the lowest electric bill in Florida, and making a few small energy efficient changes at home helps me to make it even lower.”

If you choose to make bigger changes, and somewhat larger investments - things like computer monitors, laser printers and copiers - you can realize even greater savings. Mousseau says products that have an “Energy Star” rating can save you at least 30 percent compared to traditional products.

If you want a chance to go on your own energy efficient mini-shopping spree, visit http://www.facebook.com/fplconnect on Facebook for your chance to be one of five winners each week in October to win $100 home improvement gift card.

Zevrix Updates LinkOptimizer for InDesign, Adds Selective Layer Processing

Zevrix Solutions announces LinkOptimizer 4.6, a feature update to its popular workflow automation solution for Adobe InDesign. Awarded 4 out of 5 starts by Computer Arts magazine, LinkOptimizer allows to reduce InDesign job size and speed up processing by eliminating excess image data, performing essential image adjustments and converting file formats automatically. The new version lets users ignore or process images on specific layers of InDesign document.

Toronto (ON), Canada - October 5, 2011 -- Zevrix Solutions today announces the release of LinkOptimizer 4.6, a feature update to its popular workflow automation solution for Adobe InDesign. Awarded 4 out of 5 starts by Computer Arts magazine, LinkOptimizer automates complex image manipulation tasks allowing to significantly reduce the size of InDesign job, save processing time and reduce production costs.

"For those wanting to quickly optimize their images and cut down on processing time, LinkOptimizer is a very smart choice," concludes Computer Arts.

The new version introduces selective layer processing letting users ignore or process images on specific layers of InDesign document.

LinkOptimizer works automatically with Adobe Photoshop to eliminate the excess image data of InDesign links, perform essential image adjustments and convert various image formats. For example, with just a click of a button users can:

-scale and crop images to match their dimensions in InDesign,
-change their resolution to 300 ppi,
-convert all RGB images to CMYK,
-resave all JPEG images as TIFF,
-run a Photoshop Action on each image.

At the end of processing, LinkOptimizer will reimport images to InDesign at 100% in their precise position. In addition, the software can apply sharpening filters, merge layers and delete hidden ones, and process copies of InDesign documents and links instead of original files. As a result, users can save gigabytes of disk space and countless hours of optimizing images manually, accelerate document output, reduce job turnaround and cut costs through faster processing.

Pricing and Availability:
LinkOptimizer can be purchased from Zevrix website for US$259.95 as well as from authorized resellers. Trial is also available for download. The update is free for LinkOptimizer 4.x users and $98.78 to upgrade from previous versions. LinkOptimizer is available for Mac OS X 10.4.2-10.7, a Universal Binary, and works with Adobe InDesign CS2-CS5.

FRA Supports Call To End Export Of Raw Logs

Forestry Research Associates (FRA) is lending its support to the forestry workers of British Colombia, Canada, who are calling for an end to the export of raw logs to China for processing.

Seattle, United States, October 05, 2011 -- Forestry Research Associates (FRA) is lending its support to the forestry workers of British Colombia, Canada, who are calling for an end to the export of raw logs to China for processing.

The workers are concerned that the practice could threaten the future of the region’s forestry industry. Those calling for the ban on the activity marched from the Pulp, Paper and Woodworkers of Canada (PPWC) union hall to the offices of Western Forest Products, which is responsible for some of the raw log exports.

One former worker who is campaigning against the practice, Don Robertson, said, "This industry has been almost destroyed due to raw log exports. I think all of our mills should be running and doing all the processing here so we can keep the jobs in B.C."

Peter Collins, an analyst at FRA, a research and analysis consultancy that promotes sustainable approaches to forestry around the world, said, “It’s vital that the Canadian Government takes measures to safeguard the future of the British Colombian forestry industry for generations to come.”

He added, “FRA is backing the workers all the way on this issue - the processing of the timber needs to be done in Canada, rather than outsourced to China to ensure forestry workers have jobs to do.”

FRA pointed to the concerning figures that show log exports increasing by 50 per cent last year alone, which by itself is not necessarily a negative thing, but it could be more positive if the processing work remained in Canada.

The president of the PPWC union, Arnold Bercov, said that policymakers need to take a “good hard look” at the likely repercussions if the practice of exporting raw logs for processing in China is not banned or at least reduced.

AAA Supports BBC Report On Impact Investing

People living below the poverty line in India could benefit as a result of impact investing, according to Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA) and a new report by the BBC.

Boston, MA, USA, October 05, 2011 -- People living below the poverty line in India could benefit as a result of impact investing, according to Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA) and a new report by the BBC.

AAA has said that the new report from the BBC concludes that impact investing is a useful means of helping more of the world's poor work their way out of poverty and into the middle classes. Impact investing does this by providing small businesses and social enterprises with the financial strength they need to expand and employ more people in developing countries.

Many such businesses find it difficult to secure bank loans or other traditional routes of finance. However, impact investment funds, which are sometimes run by some of the world’s most influential and wealthy people, can provide a lifeline.

The BBC report used the example of a businessman called Virender Kumar who runs a small business sorting plastics for recycling, which employs several local people. He wants to expand his business but lacks the finance to do so. This is exactly the kind of enterprise that impact investing could help.

AAA’s analysis partner Anthony Johnson stated, “Impact investing is not only a cutting edge and very effective way to help those in developing countries to work themselves out of poverty, it is also an extremely popular alternative investment route for investors with a social and environmental.

The beauty of impact investment is that a small loan can make a huge difference to a community, explained Mr Johnson. He added, “Small loans can help small businesses take on more employees, whose children can then go to school instead of being sent out to work, which helps to make communities better-educated and stronger in the long run."

Now, JP Morgan and The Times of India are teaming up to launch an award for businesses that have a major social impact. Awards organizer Rahul Kansal told the BBC, “Increasingly we are seeing that in a country like India, there are avenues like healthcare, education, civic areas like waste management which need attention.

"The government cannot cope with the size of the problem. This is where organizations both for profit and non-profit can step in,” he added.
