Breathing Exercises Are Key to Relieving Stress, Say Experts

Many specialists believe that breathing exercises are essential to relieve stress. Yet reaping their benefits requires recognizing the need for such exercises.

New York, NY - October 26, 2011 -- Many specialists believe that breathing exercises are essential to relieve stress. Yet reaping their benefits requires recognizing the need for such exercises.

Recognizing the true extent of stress in our lives can be difficult,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH). “If you learn to identify the signs of stress, and nip it by taking a mini (or maxi) relaxation break, the greater your overall health and odds of longevity will be.”

Stress shows itself in classic ways: a headache, stiff neck, nagging backache, rapid breathing, sweaty palms or upset stomach. “If you notice you are getting irritable and less tolerant of minor disturbances, or losing your temper and yelling, you are likely reacting to stress,” Dian notes. Higher pulse, inability to concentrate, jumpiness and constant exhaustion are other clues.

Some of the best breathing exercises, say the Griesels, bring multiple senses into the process of relaxation. One example is “Palming”: Close your eyes and cover with the palms of your hands. Block out all light-but don't add too much pressure on your eyelids. Breathe in deeply to a count of 5. Hold for a count of 5. Release to a count of 5. Repeat.

Another TurboCharged exercise is “Imagining”: Take a deep breath or two. Slowly breathe in to a count of 5, a hold for 5 and a release to a count of about 5. In your mind’s eye, see a mental picture of something relaxing: a stream, mountains, a lake, the ocean, a smiling face, relaxing in the sun, a walk in the woods or a garden. Allow yourself to linger in the image as you breathe deeply. Continue with deep breaths in, a comfortable hold, and a long steady release.

Zoo Miami celebrates New Solar Array donated by FPL

On Oct. 25, 2011, FPL and Zoo Miami celebrated the unveiling of the first solar array installed on the Zoo grounds, located in the Amazon & Beyond exhibit on top of the trellis area in the main plaza.

Juno Beach, FL - October 26, 2011 -- On Oct. 25, 2011, FPL and Zoo Miami celebrated the unveiling of the first solar array installed on the Zoo grounds, located in the Amazon & Beyond exhibit on top of the trellis area in the main plaza.

Part of FPL’s Next Generation Solar Education Station program, the solar array is a donation from Florida Power & Light Company and the result of a partnership with Zoo Miami and the Zoological Society of Florida to expand the zoo’s green initiatives.

The Zoo Miami Next Generation Solar Education Station features operational solar panels similar to those in service at FPL’s DeSoto Next Generation Energy Center in Arcadia, Fla. The array of photovoltaic panels converts sunlight directly into electricity, producing on average 617 kWh of energy a month, which represents significant savings to the Zoo’s energy costs.

The solar array will also provide school groups and other visitors to the zoo with a hands-on tool to learn about renewable energy.

For the leaders of tomorrow, solar and other clean forms of renewable energy will be a major part of everyday life,” said Manny J. Rodriguez, regional director of external affairs for FPL. “In addition to providing real energy savings for the zoo, the solar array also serves as a science learning tool visitors can enjoy year-round.”

Zoo Miami is a leader in conservation and we see it fitting to partner with FPL in this very exciting project. We are proud and very fortunate to have this partnership with FPL in our efforts to become sustainability leaders among our peers in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums,” said Eric Stephens, Zoo Miami Director.

Zoological Society of Florida President & CEO Benjamin H. Pingree applauds this project and is thrilled to know that FPL is helping the zoo further its conservation efforts. “The solar array will produce enough power to run a computer, dishwasher, microwave oven, refrigerator, television, water heater, clothes washer and dryer all at the same time for one month!”
